Coriolis-induced instabilities in centrifuge modeling of granular flow

چکیده
Abstract Granular flows are typically studied in laboratory flumes based on common similarity scaling, which create stress fields that only roughly approximate field conditions. The geotechnical centrifuge produces conditions closer to those observed the field, but steady can be hardly achieved. Moreover, secondary effects induced by apparent Coriolis acceleration, either dilate or compress flow, often obscure scaling. This work aims at studying a set of numerical experiments where acceleration measured and analyzed. Three flow states observed: dense, dilute, unstable. It is found generated under influence dilative accelerations likely become Nevertheless, dense still obtained if large used. A parametric group proposed predict insurgence instabilities; this parameter guide experimental designs could help avoid damage apparatus model instrumentation. Graphic abstract

Mathematical Modeling of Flow in a Granular Permeable Bed Channel
In this research, a two-dimensional mathematical model using turbulence model was developed in a rectangular channel with granular permeable bed. Finite volume method was used for numerical solution of governing equations. The equations considered are discretized using Hybrid difference scheme while applying SIMPLE algorithm to correct velocity components in the continuity equation. In the dev...
متن کاملInstabilities in Granular Flows
The flow and handling of granular materials is of major importance to many industries. Yet despite efforts over several decades, the modeling of such flows has achieved only modest success. Dense gravity-driven flows in hoppers have been often modeled as elastic-plastic continua, for example. In this picture, the granular material flows as a plastic with a frictional yield condition, and deform...
متن کاملModeling and control of compressor flow instabilities
Stable operation of both axial and radial compressors is constrained by the occurence of aerodynamic flow instabilities: rotating stall and surge. Developments in the understanding of the physics behind these instabilities and ideas of how t o stabilize the compressor system, have opened the door t o a new era in the field of compressor control. This study gives an overview of the current state...
متن کاملMicro Coriolis Flow Sensor
In recent years, the interest in integrated microfluidic systems has been steadily growing. In these systems (for instance (bio)chemical and DNA analysis and synthesis devices), accurate dosing of liquids and/or gases is of great importance. To achieve this, accurate (mass) flow sensing is necessary. This project is dedicated to the development of a new micro Coriolis flow sensor. The inherent ...
متن کاملSurface instabilities in shock loaded granular media
The initiation and growth of instabilities in granular materials loaded by air shock waves are investigated via shock-tube experiments and numerical calculations. Three types of granular media, dry sand, water-saturated sand and a granular solid comprising PTFE spheres were experimentally investigated by air shock loading slugs of these materials in a transparent shock tube. Under all shock pre...
